Collection: Sunshine Sunset Fashion

Interact is pleased to present Sunshine Sunset Fashion, an exhibition that explores the intersection of art and fashion. Over the course of the last four months, a group of fourteen visual artists met weekly online to discuss the latest runway shows, their personal wardrobe favorites, and the ways their visual art practices might be applied to garments. Together they considered questions such as: how can a drawing be worn? Can a collar or a cape be a sculpture? Working in embroidery, crochet, surface pattern and garment design, the artists developed responses from their home studios. They pooled their interests for inspiration, generating a mood board that includes aliens, bald eagles, anatomical drawings, and Grace Jones. 

As its title suggests, Sunshine Sunset Fashion speaks to the daily routine of putting oneself together. It features wardrobe staples that have been tweaked to perfection (Ashlea Karkula’s hand-painted tee with bees and sharks playing basketball, for example) alongside more experimental garments, like HML’s Fantastic Shape, the latest in her series of brawny muscle suits. The exhibition also investigates clothing as a means of self-expression. BDG Wolfe’s a la carte collars, with titles like Urban Lion and Joy in the Face of Adversity, highlight a unifying sentiment amongst the artists, who developed pieces that are meant to ignite the wearer’s eccentricities and accessorize the audacious. 

Artists in the exhibition include Katie Bretzman, Janice Essick, Peder Hagen, Ingrid Hansen, HML, Ashlea Karkula, Laurie M., Rosemary Perronteau, Lucy Picasso, John Riddle, Andrew Seymour, Briana Shelstad, Eric Sherarts, and BDG Wolfe.
