Collection: Uniquinox: Tarot Alive

Interact is thrilled to present Uniquinox: Tarot Alive, an exhibition that accompanies the outdoor puppetry festival on July 9, 2022, of the same name. Collaboratively organized by a group of Interact artists and staff, both the exhibition and festival imagine new futures through the lens of the Tarot, cultivating perseverance, strength, and growth through the deck’s iconic symbols and archetypes. 

Uniquinox: Tarot Alive the festival featured puppetry performances by Interact artists and staff with poetry by Koko Dehn, D.D. Kilgore, and Evita Newman read aloud. Oversized puppets of the Lovers, Death, the Sun, and other archetypes from the Tarot intermingled as visitors reveled in carnival games, live art-making, music, and food.  

This exhibition features responses by 49 Interact artists and staff to each of the 78 cards in a Tarot deck alongside some of the puppets from the festival. Taking a broad range of forms and attitudes, this work was made during the pandemic, first from the artists’ homes as they convened online, and later from the Interact studio. It represents a period that has both challenged and enlivened our community, instilling lessons in accessibility, community care, and the importance of art in times of crisis.
