Almost every piece that Andy Seymour has created in the last two decades is titled Summer – a reference to summers at his mother’s lake cabin in northern Minnesota. The cabin was called Windfall, and it is where Andy, his mother, his brothers Forrest and Macy, and their growing families spent precious summer days.
Seymour began his career at Interact in 2002, when the studio was located in downtown Minneapolis. In the early years, he drew landscapes: trees, people, and the sun were articulated in graphite, washes of watercolor illuminating their bright leaves, faces, and rays. With time, Seymour trained his eye on the sun. In one drawing from the mid-2000’s, it appears dozens of times in rows upon rows of circular white forms that are dappled with little rays and repeated on black paper.
In the coming years, the celestial body would morph and grow in Seymour’s work, taking on new meanings and forms across more than twenty years and hundreds of drawings. He has come to describe the circular shapes in many pieces as people: sometimes artists in the studio, where both his work and his kind effervescence have made a lasting impression – but most often, family at Windfall.
Seymour’s practice is profoundly generative. Each mark leads to another, each drawing to another. He begins every piece in the top left corner of the paper or canvas, working across the page in a way that echoes the process of writing. He works quickly and decisively, often completing between one and three pieces a week.
Featuring over 60 drawings and paintings, Summeris Andy’s windfall. His first solo exhibition brings together over 20 years of visual exploration, marking an important moment in the career of an artist whose work continues to surprise and delight.
