Gary Rorby’s narrative drawings recount moments from the artist’s life as well as his reflections on current events, pop culture, and religion. Swept up in fields of poetic, often humorous prose, the people and animals in his work go on adventures, get into mischief, and grapple with politics and spirituality. Like his cursive handwriting and loose, looping drawing style, time is fluid in Rorby’s work. He takes the viewer backwards and forwards, simultaneously crafting scenes for the future, the present, and the past, and imbuing them with wistful nostalgia.
Rorby has been an artist for over seventy years. He contributed to Day and Night Spell, a poetry and comics anthology published by Interact in 2022. In 2023, he presented work at HGA Architects & Engineers in Minneapolis, MN.
