When asked what he would like people to know about his work, Carl Clark says, "I wanted to pass time." Clark composes expansive spaces – skies, fields, mountains, and seas – with contemplative, measured strokes. He brings a pragmatic approach to his paintings, lacing them, every now and then, with visual non sequiturs that impart a liminal quality. A small town, articulated in transparent hues, recedes softly into a mountain. Ships traverse grey waters, appearing to be at once moving, frozen, or sinking. Some works seem to suggest the supernatural, with indecipherable structures and enigmatic, billowing puffs of light. In others, dramatic shifts in scale present minute details huddled inside grandiose vistas. Looming hills are dappled with tiny houses, their windows and doors so small as to be painted in just a few weightless gestures.
Clark (b. 1965) has practiced at Interact since 2016. In 2021, he presented work in WILD GOOSE, a two-person exhibition with New York-based artist Jack Arthur Wood, Jr. In 2024, he presented work alongside fellow Interact artist Mike Harris, Jr. in Armadillo, a two-person exhibition at Interact Gallery. He has been featured in Interact’s booths at the Outsider Art Fair in New York and Creativity Explored x Open Invitational Art Fair in San Francisco.
