Cal Nesbitt’s paintings depict bustling, imaginative worlds. Brightly smiling figures, chugging boats, bicycles, and cars intermingle with natural elements such as smoke, clouds, trees, and trails of stars, creating a sense of motion and emerging narrative. In some works, Nesbitt slowly layers acrylic paint over time, building dimensional surfaces that resemble topographic maps. In his black-and-white paintings, richly saturated imagery is transformed into dramatic greyscale compositions that evoke the moody atmosphere of film noir or the haunting quality of an old photograph. Across his work, a sense of energy and buzz is transmitted to the viewer, inviting us to join in the adventure as it unfolds.
Cal's work was presented at the Outsider Art Fair in New York as part of Interact's booth in 2026. He has presented work in exhibitions at Minneapolis Central Library and Interact Gallery.
